“Hanging out at Robert’s, a storied Nashville honky-tonk, a decade ago my friend Dave burst in blathering something about the best band he’d ever heard playing next door at Layla’s. Sure Dave. After a few more of these uncontrolled outbursts Dave persuaded us to leave Robert’s and we somehow shouldered our way into a packed Layla’s. Dave was right and we met and fell in love with Lillie Mae and her then band of siblings Jypsi that night. We became instant friends and I’ve enjoyed watching her undeniable career blossom ever since. Mae’s latest project, Other Girls, was produced by the ubiquitous Grammy Award-winner Dave Cobb at the historic RCA Studio A. This is Mae’s second release on Third Man Records, following Forever and Then Some in 2017.
“Other Girls hits the Americana nail right on the head in that it uses a foundation of folk with bluegrass band timing and blues and country stylistic choices while tonally and stylistically evoking a sound that's dark and Southern gothic,” writes The Boot. “It's sophisticated, layered and a clear move toward a bolder sound.”
